(AP) ? Software company founder John McAfee was denied political asylum in Guatemala on Thursday and police in Belize said they expected him to be flown back soon for questioning about the killing of a fellow American expatriate.

Guatemalan authorities said McAfee's request for asylum had been denied but did not explain why. Shortly after the decision was announced, McAfee issued a plea on his blog for the public to petition Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina to let him stay.

"Please email the President of Guatemala and beg him to allow the court system to proceed, to determine my status in Guatemala, and please support the political asylum that I am asking for," the post read.

McAfee was last seen in a Guatemalan immigration detention center after his arrest for illegally entering the country ended a bizarre weekslong journey as a self-styled fugitive with an active blog and constant contact with the press.

McAfee told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview inside his private room in the center that he had suffered chest pain in the night but had refused to travel to a hospital because he had been using Chinese herbal medicine since suffering a heart attack in 1993.

"Last night I had a little bit of pain, but I am fine this morning," he said. "I don't like western medicine ... if the people around me are kind and compassionate, that's all that matters in life. The people of Guatemala are very kind people, so I have no complaints."

Belizean police spokesman Raphael Martinez said officials expected McAfee to be flown back to the capital. Police hope to question him about the fatal shooting of killing of Gregory Viant Faull, who was shot to death in early November on the Belize island where both men lived.

There is no warrant for McAfee's arrest, so it is possible that his self-initiated flight from Belizean authority could end up with him free to roam the Caribbean island where he lived for years, often clashing with neighbors and authorities over allegations he kept aggressive dogs, weapons and drug paraphernalia on his property.

McAfee was updating his blog Thursday after being given a computer by the warden at the migration center in Guatemala City, a three-story building with mesh-covered windows and barbed-wire on the roof.

He said U.S. Embassy officials had said they couldn't help him with a request to be returned to the United States instead of Belize. McAfee said he had formally requested asylum in Guatemala because he fears for his safety because he has sensitive information about official corruption and refused to donate to local politicians.

Since refusing to turn himself in to authorities in Belize, the 67-year-old had been in hiding, blogging his movements and calling reporters, until reappearing in Guatemala to claim asylum. He has not said how he crossed the border into Guatemala.

Guerra warned Wednesday night that McAfee's life would be in danger if he is returned to Belize.

"He will be in danger if he is returned to Belize, where he has denounced authorities," Guerra said. "From the moment he asked for asylum he has to have the protection of the Guatemalan government."

Police in Belize deny they are persecuting McAfee and say there is no warrant for his arrest. The country's prime minister has even questioned McAfee's mental state.

McAfee went on the run last month after officials tried to question him about the killing of Faull, who was shot to death in early November on the Belize island where both men lived.

McAfee acknowledges that his dogs were bothersome and that Faull had complained about them, but denies killing Faull.

Faull's home was a couple of houses down from McAfee's compound.

The Faull family has said through a representative that the murder of their loved one on Ambergris Caye has gotten lost in the media frenzy provoked by McAfee's manipulation of the media through phone calls, emails and blog posts detailing his life on the lam.

McAfee grabbed global attention with regular phone calls with reporters and blog updates. He claimed to be wearing disguises and watching as police raided his house. It was unclear, however, how much of what McAfee ? a confessed practical joker ? said and wrote was true.

He had earlier said he didn't plan to leave Belize but ultimately did because he thought the young woman who has accompanied him since he went into hiding was in danger.

McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus program, has led an eccentric life since he sold his stake in the anti-virus software company that is named after him in the early 1990s and moved to Belize about three years ago to lower his taxes.

He told The New York Times in 2009 that he had lost all but $4 million of his $100 million fortune in the U.S. financial crisis. However, a story on the Gizmodo website quoted him as calling that claim "not very accurate at all." He has dabbled in yoga, ultra-light aircraft and producing herbal medications.

Panel Passes Bipartisan Singer Bill to End Costly Health Insurance ...

Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) is a step closer to eliminating the state requirement that every student who is enrolled full-time at a public or private institution of higher education in New Jersey maintain and show proof of health insurance coverage. Senator Singer?s bipartisan bill S-2291 was unanimously passed today by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

?The increasing cost of college has New Jersey students and their families reeling,? Singer said. ?Far too many struggle to even finish degrees that they have already paid tens of thousands of dollars to obtain, because tuition and book expenses become unaffordable. Peripheral cost requirements should not hurt their chances of achieving a degree.?

Senator Singer?s bill, which heads to the full Senate and awaits Assembly action, maintains the requirement that all institutions of higher education in New Jersey offer health insurance coverage for purchase by students who are enrolled full-time at the institution. It does not supersede federal health insurance requirements within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. (PPACA) would still be applicable.

?Colleges should not have to police their campuses to investigate student?s health insurance,? added Singer,?a board member?of Georgian Court University in Lakewood. ?They are opposed to doing it and would rather use their resources toward improving education and experiences.?

Senator Singer is also a lead sponsor of student loan literacy legislation to assure that New Jersey high schools educate students and families about student loan rates, schedules, debt and defaults.

Matt Brown ready for bout with Mike Swick, who never answered him on MySpace

When Matt Brown gets into the octagon with Mike Swick at UFC on Fox 5 on Saturday, he'll be facing a fighter he was a fan of. Brown told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that after Swick appeared on first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Brown sent him a message via the once-popular social network MySpace.

"He was the first fighter I really looked up to on 'The Ultimate Fighter 1.' I wrote him a message on MySpace, and I was real pissed when he never replied to my message. Was like, 'he's an [expletive.]"

He smiled at the idea that this slight serves as an incentive for him to win.

"That's my whole motivation for this camp. I didn't get a reply on My Space."

Brown appeared on the seventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter." He has put together an 8-5 record in the UFC since appearing on the reality show, and is riding a three-fight winning streak. Will Brown continue the streak this Saturday? Speak up in the comments, Twitter or on Facebook. (But not MySpace.)

Fonterra Global Dairy Trade Auction Prices Drop | Stuff.co.nz

Prices at Fonterra's latest online dairy auction fell overnight, snapping a three-strong run of gains due to added supply coming online.

The GDT-TWI Price Index fell 2 per cent, with an average winning price of US$3290 per metric tonne. That followed a 0.7 per cent gain in the previous sale two weeks ago.

Kymberly Martin, a market strategist at BNZ said the decline appeared to be the result of unexpected jump in supply available at the sale, although she stressed the drop in price was within her margin of fluctuation.

Maximum Supply, or the measure of how much dairy product Fonterra has for sale, was 53,360 metric tonnes. A total of 52,596 tonnes was sold.

"Combined with the positive result seen in yesterday's ANZ commodity price index (up 1 per cent in November) this confirms our view that NZ commodity prices are broadly consolidating recent gains," she said.

The already closely watched GDT sale is likely to receive even higher scrutiny after the float of the Fonterra Shareholders Fund, a pool of freely tradeable units which give investors exposure to the dairy giant's profits via dividends.

Some market commentators believe this sets New Zealand's biggest company up for a conflict of interest, with farmer shareholders wanting higher farm gate milk prices, while outside investors will want lower dairy prices - seen as an input cost ? to maximise margins.

At the current level, ANZ believes the dairy price is supportive of a $5.50 per kilogram of milk solids farm gate pay out.

At last night's auction, four of the eight products categories showed price declines, two weren't traded, and two rose.

Whole milk powder, the largest product category by volume, fell 3.5 per cent. Anhydrous milk fat led gainers, with prices up 3.7 per cent.

The auction saw 178 participants out of a 729 qualified bidders take part, with 141 winning bids.

Boeing forecasts demand for 2,370 new airplanes in Middle East ...

According to the Boeing Current Market Outlook (CMO), long-range, twin-aisle airplanes - such as the Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner - will dominate the Middle East's order books, reflecting the global network priorities of the region's leading carriers, such as Qatar Airways.

Significantly, airlines in the Middle East currently have a backlog of 882 airplanes, 62% of which are long-haul, twin-aisle and large aircraft.

"The Middle East has consistently outperformed the global aviation market over the past few years, achieving traffic growth well above the world average," said Randy Tinseth, Vice President of Marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, who presented the CMO in Doha.

"As the region's leading carriers, such as Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways, continue their global expansion plans we are seeing demand for new, efficient, long-haul aircraft, capable of connecting their hubs with any city in the world. With a backlog of almost 174,000 long-haul seats, the region's carriers have significantly more long-haul capacity than airlines in other regions such as Europe and Asia," he added.

According to the Boeing forecast, twin-aisle aircraft, such as the Boeing 777 and 787 will account for 46% of the region's new airplane deliveries over the 20-year period - as compared to 23% globally. Single-aisle airplanes, such as the Boeing 737, will account for 45% of regional deliveries through to 2031, while large airplanes such as the Boeing 747 will account for 8% of forecasted demand. Regional jets are expected to account for the remaining 1% of the demand.

Globally, Boeing has forecast a long-term demand for 34,000 new airplanes, valued at $4.5 trillion. These new airplanes will replace older, less efficient airplanes, benefiting airlines and passengers and stimulating growth in emerging markets and innovation in airline business models. To meet the growing demand for new airplanes, Boeing has increased production of its popular 737, 777 and 787 airplane families.

As of October 2012, Boeing had a backlog of 4,234 airplanes, of which, 337 have been ordered by customers in the Middle East, including Qatar Airways, which recently took delivery of the first of 30 787 Dreamliners it has on order. The Company currently has a total of 44 airline customers in the region that operate 476 Boeing airplanes.

"The Middle East's continued success can largely be attributed to the strong business fundamentals of carriers such as Qatar Airways and their ability to successfully leverage natural geographic advantages," Tinseth added.

"We are confident that our range of market-driving products and solutions will continue to play a critical role in meeting the rapidly growing needs of the region's aviation industry," he concluded.

(AP) ? Mr. Sulu in Riverdale? Oh my!

Actor and equal rights advocate George Takei, whose portrayal of the Star Trek character in television and film has made him a science fiction legend, is crossing a new frontier this week by appearing as himself in issue No. 6 of Archie Comics' "Kevin Keller," a series about Riverdale's only gay teenager.

Takei, who is also gay, said his appearance in the issue that is released Wednesday dovetails nicely with his real-life advocacy for equal rights because it helps bring home his message that anyone can aspire to be what they want to be no matter who they are.

"With Archie Comics, it's a fun way and a natural way and an ideal way of advocating happily," Takei said.

Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics' co-chief executive officer, said writer and artist Dan Parent "met George at a convention and asked him if he'd be interested in appearing in the Kevin Keller comic, and being a huge Star Trek fan I flipped when he agreed. Sulu was always my favorite character so I said do whatever it takes to get him in the comic."

Takei, who is signing copies of the comic Wednesday at Midtown Comics in New York, was quick to say yes.

"I remember as a preteen and a teenager, I used to read Archie Comics," said Takei, 75, who grew up in California. "I was so flattered."

In the story Takei is the subject of an essay by Keller who cites him as an inspirational hero ? not just for his acting ? but his advocating on behalf of Asian-Americans and gays and lesbians, too.

"I've always been an advocate. I grew up in two U.S. internment camps. I was too young to understand that at the time," he said. "As a teenager I couldn't reconcile what I was reading in my civics books with my boyhood."

That led him to realize that he would have to speak out and up for equality, something he's been doing publicly since coming out in 2005. It's also gotten him nearly 3.1 million fans on Facebook where he blends humor, nerdiness and earnestness in his postings.

"Humor plays and kittens play," he said of his page. "And I slip in a little advocacy in between because it's me."

Three rescued, 9 missing after ship sinks off Istanbul

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Three crew members were rescued and nine still missing after their ship sank in a storm off Istanbul's Black Sea coast on Tuesday, Turkey's coastal safety authority said.

The Volgo Balt 199, which was carrying coal and had 11 Ukrainian and one Russian crew on board, sent an SOS signal at 0730 GMT off the town of Sile on Istanbul's provincial coast but all contact was then lost, shipping agent GAC Turkey said.

"Rescue operations are ongoing," the Directorate General of Coastal Safety said in a statement.

A helicopter and rescue boats were searching for the missing crew, while a second cargo ship with 14 crew members on board had experienced mechanical failure and was also at risk of sinking, GAC said. Television footage showed the second vessel listing heavily in high seas.

Sile lies about 40 km (25 miles) east of the northern end of the Bosphorus Strait, the only maritime outlet for cargo from Black Sea countries, including Russian oil and grain.

Bad weather frequently forces the strait's closure in winter, but GAC said the Bosphorus remained open on Tuesday. About 10,000 vessels carrying 150 million tonnes of oil and petroleum products use the strait every year.

Egypt's Mursi leaves palace as police battle protesters

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside President Mohamed Mursi's palace in Cairo on Tuesday, prompting the Islamist leader to leave the building, presidency sources said.

Officers fired teargas at up to 10,000 demonstrators angered by Mursi's drive to hold a referendum on a new constitution on December 15. Some broke through police lines around his palace and protested next to the perimeter wall.

The crowds had gathered nearby in what organizers had dubbed "last warning" protests against Mursi, who infuriated opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the demonstrators chanted.

"The president left the palace," a presidential source, who declined to be named, told Reuters. A security source at the presidency also said the president had departed.

Mursi ignited a storm of unrest in his bid to prevent a judiciary still packed with appointees of ousted predecessor Hosni Mubarak from derailing a troubled political transition.

Facing the gravest crisis of his six-month-old tenure, the Islamist president has shown no sign of buckling under pressure.

Riot police at the palace faced off against activists chanting "leave, leave" and holding Egyptian flags with "no to the constitution" written on them. Protesters had assembled near mosques in northern Cairo before marching towards the palace.

"Our marches are against tyranny and the void constitutional decree and we won't retract our position until our demands are met," said Hussein Abdel Ghany, a spokesman for an opposition coalition of liberal, leftist and other disparate factions.

Protesters later surrounded the palace, with some climbing on gates at the rear to look down into the gardens.

At one point, people clambered onto a police armored vehicle and waved flags, while riot police huddled nearby.

The Health Ministry said 18 people had been injured in clashes next to the palace, according to the state news agency.

YEARNING FOR STABILITY

Despite the latest protests, there has been only a limited response to opposition calls for a mass campaign of civil disobedience in the Arab world's most populous country and cultural hub, where many people yearn for a return to stability.

A few hundred protesters gathered earlier near Mursi's house in a suburb east of Cairo, chanting slogans against his decree and against the Muslim Brotherhood, from which the president emerged to win a free election in June. Police closed the road to stop them from coming any closer, a security official said.

Opposition groups have accused Mursi of making a dictatorial power grab to push through a constitution drafted by an assembly dominated by his supporters, with a referendum planned for December 15.

They say the draft constitution does not reflect the interests of Egypt's liberals and other groups, an accusation dismissed by Islamists who insist it is a balanced document.

Egypt's most widely-read independent newspapers did not publish on Tuesday in protest at Mursi's "dictatorship". Banks closed early to let staff go home safely in case of trouble.

Abdelrahman Mansour in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cradle of the anti-Mubarak revolt, said: "The presidency believes the opposition is too weak and toothless. Today is the day we show them the opposition is a force to be reckoned with."

But after winning post-Mubarak elections and pushing the Egyptian military out of the political driving seat it held for decades, the Islamists sense their moment has come to shape the future of Egypt, a longtime U.S. ally whose 1979 peace treaty with Israel is a cornerstone of Washington's Middle East policy.

The Muslim Brotherhood and its allies, who staged a huge pro-Mursi rally in Cairo on Saturday, are confident enough members of the judiciary will be available to oversee the mid-December referendum, despite calls by some judges for a boycott.

"The crisis we have suffered for two weeks is on its way to an end, and very soon, God willing," Saad al-Katatni, leader of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Cairo stocks closed up 3.5 percent as investors took heart at what they saw as prospects for a return to stability after the referendum in a country whose divisions have only widened since a mass uprising toppled Mubarak on February 11, 2011.

Mohamed Radwan, at Pharos Securities brokerage, said the Supreme Judicial Council's agreement to supervise the vote had generated confidence that it would go ahead "despite all the noise and demonstrations that might take place until then".

"NO WAY PERFECT"

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil, a technocrat with Islamist sympathies, said in an interview with CNN: "We certainly hope that things will quiet down after the referendum is completed."

He said the constitution was "in no way a perfect text" that everyone had agreed to, but that a "majority consensus" favored moving forward with the referendum in 11 days' time.

The Muslim Brotherhood, now tasting power via the ballot box for the first time in eight decades of struggle, wants to safeguard its gains and appears ready to override street protests by what it regards as an unrepresentative minority.

It is also determined to prevent the courts, which have already dissolved the Islamist-led elected lower house of parliament, from further obstructing their blueprint for change.

Despite charges that they are anti-Islamist and politically motivated, judges say they are following legal codes in their rulings. Experts say some political changes rushed through in the past two years have been on shaky legal ground.

A Western diplomat said the Islamists were counting on a popular desire for restored normality and economic stability.

"All the messages from the Muslim Brotherhood are that a vote for the constitution is one for stability and a vote against is one for uncertainty," he said, adding that the cost of the strategy was a "breakdown in consensus politics".

5 states to increase class time in some schools

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Open your notebooks and sharpen your pencils. School for thousands of public school students is about to get quite a bit longer.

Five states announced Monday that they will add at least 300 hours of learning time to the calendar in some schools starting in 2013. Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee will take part in the initiative, which is intended to boost student achievement and make U.S. schools more competitive on a global level.

The three-year pilot program will affect almost 20,000 students in 40 schools, with long-term hopes of expanding the program to include additional schools ? especially those that serve low-income communities. Schools, working in concert with districts, parents and teachers, will decide whether to make the school day longer, add more days to the school year or both.

All told, education officials expect to provide nearly 6 million more student learning hours next year.

"I'm convinced the kind of results we'll see over the next couple of years I think will compel the country to act in a very different way," said Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

A mix of federal, state and district funds will cover the costs of expanded learning time, with the Ford Foundation and the National Center on Time & Learning also chipping in resources. In Massachusetts, the program builds on the state's existing expanded-learning program. In Connecticut, Gov. Dannel Malloy is hailing it as a natural outgrowth of an education reform law the state passed in May that included about $100 million in new funding, much of it to help the neediest schools.

Spending more time in the classroom, officials said, will give students access to a more well-rounded curriculum that includes arts and music, individualized help for students who fall behind and opportunities to reinforce critical math and science skills.

"That extra time with their teachers or within a structured setting means all the world," said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. "It means it allows them to continue the momentum they had the day before. It means they don't slip back over the summer. It allows them to really deliver."

At Stober Elementary in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, Colo., teachers and principals nervously embraced the idea.

"It's hard to get through all the curriculum in the time we have," said fourth grade teacher Jeanette Martinez, although she wondered how it would affect planning time and other teacher duties. "The extra hour is cool, but where are we going to get everything else done?"

Not all students were opposed, either, with some welcoming the chance to spend more time with their friends. But they drew the line at summer school.

"That's a 'no way' for me," fourth grader Olivia Nevadomski said in a school playground interview. "It's for sleepovers, staying up late and sleeping in."

The project comes as educators across the U.S. struggle to identify the best ways to strengthen a public education system that many fear has fallen behind other nations. Student testing, teacher evaluations, charter schools and voucher programs join longer school days on the list of reforms that have been put forward with varying degrees of success.

The report from the center, which advocates for extending instruction time, cites research suggesting students who spend more hours learning perform better. One such study, from Harvard economist Roland Fryer, argues that of all the factors affecting educational outcomes, two are the best predictors of success: intensive tutoring and adding at least 300 hours to the standard school calendar.

More classroom time has long been a priority for Duncan, who warned a congressional committee in May 2009 ? just months after becoming education secretary ? that American students were at a disadvantage compared to their peers in India and China. That same year, he suggested schools should be open six or seven days per week and should run 11 or 12 months out of the year.

"I think this is the kernels of a national movement," he said Monday as he announced the initiative.

But not everyone agrees that shorter school days are to blame. A report last year from the National School Boards Association's Center for Public Education disputed the notion that American schools have fallen behind in classroom time, pointing out that students in high-performing countries like South Korea, Finland and Japan actually spend less time in school than most U.S. students.

The broader push to extend classroom time could also run up against concerns from teachers unions. Longer school days became a major sticking point in a seven-day teachers strike in September in Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel eventually won an extension of the school day but paid the price in other concessions granted to teachers.

Just over 1,000 U.S. schools already operate on expanded schedules, an increase of 53 percent over 2009, according to a report being released Monday in connection with the announcement by the National Center on Time & Learning. The nonprofit group said more schools should follow suit but stressed that expanded learning time isn't the right strategy for every school.

Some of the funds required to add 300 or more hours to the school calendar will come from shifting resources from existing federal programs, making use of the flexibility granted by waivers to No Child Left Behind. All five states taking part in the initiative have received waivers from the Education Department.

Israel feels heat from allies over settlements

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A defiant Israel rejected a wave of American and European condemnations Monday over plans to build thousands of new homes in West Bank settlements, vowing to press forward with the construction in the face of widespread international opposition.

The announcement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office was likely to deepen a rift that has emerged between Israel and some of its closest allies following the U.N.'s recognition of a Palestinian state last week. The U.N. decision appears to be fueling a tougher international line against Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Israeli ambassadors were summoned for consultations in five European capitals, and European officials warned of other potential measures against Israel. In Washington, the U.S. said the Israeli actions were "especially damaging" to peace prospects.

Italian Premier Mario Monti and French President Francois Hollande issued a joint statement saying they were "deeply worried" by Israel's settlement plans. The two men, meeting in Lyon, France, called the Israeli decisions "serious and illegal" and a "serious obstacle" to Mideast peace.

Netanyahu, however, showed no signs of bending. His office said Israel would continue to stand up for its interests "even in the face of international pressure, and there will be no change in the decision taken."

Europe could potentially play a strong role in any international action against the settlements. Europe is Israel's largest trade partner, and Israel has a partnership with the EU giving its exports preferential status.

But divisions within Europe could make it difficult to take any concerted action. Germany, Europe's largest economy, has a close relationship with Israel, and given its history as the perpetrator of the Holocaust, it is unlikely to take any strong action against the Jewish state.

In last week's decision, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly recognized a Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

Netanyahu rejects a return to the 1967 lines. His government also fears the Palestinians will use their upgraded status to join the U.N.'s International Criminal Court and pursue war crimes charges against Israel.

But Israel was joined by only eight other countries in opposing the bid, which was seen as a resounding international rejection of Israeli settlements in occupied territories. In a slap to Israel, its closest European allies ? Britain, Germany, Italy and France ? all abstained or voted with the Palestinians.

Israel has angrily condemned the vote as an attempt by the Palestinians to bypass negotiations. In particular, Netanyahu's government says it undermines any chance of negotiations over future border arrangements by endorsing the Palestinians' territorial demands.

The Israeli response to the U.N. decision was swift and strong. Just hours after Thursday's vote, Israel announced plans to build 3,000 new homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. It also said it would begin plans to develop a sensitive part of the West Bank just outside of Jerusalem.

Although construction is likely years off at best, the mere intention to build in the area known as "E1" is potentially explosive because of its strategic location in the middle of the West Bank. Israel also said it was withholding a regularly scheduled tax transfer to the Palestinians and using the money to pay off Palestinian debts to Israeli utilities.

After a flurry of angry European protests over the weekend, the Israeli ambassadors to Britain, France, Spain, Sweden and Denmark were all summoned by their hosts on Monday.

"I set out the depth of the U.K.'s concern about these decisions and I called on the Israeli government to reverse them. The settlements plan in particular has the potential to alter the situation on the ground on a scale that threatens the viability of a two-state solution," said Alistair Burt, Britain's minister for Mideast affairs.

The United States also condemned the planned construction.

"The United States opposes all unilateral actions, including West Bank settlement activity and housing construction in East Jerusalem, as they complicate efforts to resume direct, bilateral negotiations, and risk prejudging the outcome of those negotiations," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

The fate of Jewish settlements is at the heart of the current four-year impasse in Mideast peacemaking. The Palestinians say continued settlement construction is a sign of bad faith, and they refuse to return to the negotiating table unless Israel stops the building. More than 500,000 Israelis now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Israeli officials say the Palestinians have negotiated with previous governments while settlement construction took place. They also note that even when Netanyahu imposed a 10-month partial freeze on construction in 2009 and 2010, there were no serious peace talks. Netanyahu says negotiations should begin immediately without any preconditions.

But last week's U.N. vote appears to have marked a turning point. While the U.S. and Europe have long opposed the settlements, their new condemnations used especially sharp language, and rarely are Israeli ambassadors publicly grilled.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told parliament that "together with other EU countries we will discuss other potential steps," though he would not elaborate.

British government officials said the EU would be looking to President Barack Obama for leadership on the matter, and that British diplomats were in touch with American counterparts in London.

One EU official in Brussels said the matter will be high on the agenda of a meeting of European foreign ministers next Monday, and will also be discussed with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during a planned visit this week.

The British and EU officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations, and no firm policy had been set.

Silke Temple, a Mideast expert at the German think tank DGAP, said the European reaction was "indeed harsher" than in the past. She said Germany was likely to raise the issue of settlements with Netanyahu during a visit this week.

"There certainly will be a message at this week's consultations that it is not helpful. Constructing settlements just isn't constructive," she said.

Officials in Britain, France, Spain, Sweden and Denmark all said that no specific threats were made during Monday's meetings.

Avi Primor, a former Israeli ambassador to Germany, said he didn't think Israel had reached a "new era" in relations with Europe quite yet. But he said there is a "long-term process of public opinion gradually turning against Israel."

"Public opinion simply cannot understand the Israeli policy in occupied territories, the refusal to have a genuine peace process. Eventually, this lack of understanding will surely have an influence on governments," he said.

The diplomatic process is likely to remain on hold in the coming weeks as Israel prepares for new parliamentary elections. According to opinion polls, Netanyahu is expected to win re-election as head of a hardline coalition dominated by pro-settler politicians. Netanyahu's tough public stance in recent days may be motivated, in part at least, at creating a strong image for Israeli voters.

Palestinian officials have indicated they will wait until after the Israeli election on Jan. 22 before deciding how to proceed with their newfound diplomatic status at the U.N. Officials say they hope Obama will present a new formula for resuming peace talks after the Israeli vote.

Software to help unemployed soon in every Iowa high school

The director of the Iowa Workforce Development agency touts a controversial decision to close field offices as a success story for other states to mimic. Iowa Workforce Development director Teresa Wahlert spoke this morning at a meeting of lieutenant governors from around the country, telling the group about her agency?s shift to on-line counseling for Iowans who?re out of work.

?We closed 36 offices in that first year?We now have 19 offices,? Wahlert said. ?But the other side of that coin is with this technology, we deployed the technology into every county, into every location that you can think of where population might gather.?

The agency?s computer software is now loaded on computers in over 950 locations around the state.

?They include federal probationary offices, prisons, battered women?s shelters, faith-based organizations, libraries, the three Regent college universities, the 15 community colleges,? Wahlert said. ?Now, this year, we?ve broadened that into every single high school in the state of Iowa. We have 348 high schools and we are 96 percent of the way there in implementing our technology and information into high schools.?

Critics of the shift say it?s difficult for out-of-work Iowans to navigate the website and some of the unemployed lack the money to travel to a place where a computer with the department?s software is located. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled last year that Governor Branstad did not have the authority to redirect the money lawmakers set aside to keep the regional Workforce Development offices open. The offices had already been closed by the time the ruling was issued, however, and legislators have not acted to reopen the offices.

Ghost Hard cash Generator Impartial Evaluate

Being an internet affiliate marketing reviewer I all too often see rather a lot of supposedly new solutions or devices staying released into the industry that can be not a single thing more than a re-skin of an outdated service or procedure. It could possibly come to be somewhat wearisome examining reproduction copycat services and products, loads of of which just incorporate on incremental advancements to old solutions with Fb, Twitter or social networking plugins. Among the many most up-to-date crazes was the rise belonging to the Pinterest clones:

So its refreshing to get the chance to evaluation a product that could be in actual fact new and inventive and is also establishing that will help drive the business forward with new systems and breakthroughs in expertise.

This new scheme is introduced by Nathan Buckley (Manglon Team) and is also endorsed by legend Chris X. While you are Nathan and the Manglon Group to the facial area of it seem to be new with the online marketing sport digging a tiny bit further it seems that many of their members have ties to some of the sectors heavyweights like a Chris X, Stephen Lee Jones, Greg Solid wood, Rob Benwell and Antonio to call but a couple of.

According to Wikipedia:

The Manglon Crew is surely an via the web marketing and advertising agency situated in London and Manchester in the united kingdom. The organization operates on the internet affiliate marketing trade and operates globally by its wide-ranging affiliate marketing community and native sector representatives. Manglon Staff house owners have personally contributed to 30% for the finest internet affiliate marketing launches from the previous 24 months.

Ive been an affiliate reviewer for over eight yrs now and have been witness to a few of the superior products released by these big gamers with the sector. Earlier signs because of this new Ghost Funds Generator solution show this could perhaps be the brand new giant strike, but then perhaps its to earlier to tell?

I hope this Online world Promotion (IM) Toolreview should help outline anything you can count on as the Ghost Money Generator purchaser.

Ghost Money Generator ? fundamental solution

The primary obvious detail about Ghost Funds Generator is its from the ?web two.0? selling pedigree. The solution is easy to apply and contains a detail by detail guideline that helps you thru the set up and will get you operational ASAP. Evidently Nathan and the Manglon team went via a beta screening stage previously launching the merchandise to the market and this basically demonstrates while in the superior within the merchandise given that it can be publicly accessible to all. Seeing the initial gains using this solution and to be a buyer I will be eager to look at if I?m able to now get on to the beta testing system for every of their long term products launches as well.

The visitors powering Ghost Funds Generator evidently have got an exceptional crew of technologists and proficient marketeers merely because their program has someway found a brand new way to efficiently elicit profits in the way that debunks the traditional affiliate marketing model and usually takes it within a new route.

The Ghost Money Generator device appears to be to by some means accrue profits streams by instantly putting together sizeable quantities of referral customers then getting a lower of your profits. This is certainly not also dissimilar into the Pinterest internet marketing business product, which the majority of specialists presume could possibly be bigger than Amazon if startups like ?Shopinterest? and cultural commerce usually takes off. Whilst China and cultural networking siteRen Ren has undoubtedly led the way in highlighting the social looking we are nevertheless to view who?ll very own that sector inside of the Western current market.

Due to the fact it stands the key Ghost Funds Generator product appears to be to stay about its billing, but it gets a lot more useful when the more innovative increase ons were acquired. I?m now working the enhanced solution and am imagining I will more than likely procure the more enhance as being the solution is apparently performing extremely well so far. It is actually scarce to look at that an item similar to this succeed even half as good as its touted; but so far so useful. I?m also curious to check out how reliable the item continues to be one time even more persons are choosing it ? but for now on some days it can be earning me some extremely phenomenal returns. We ll just have to find out if the cadence can continue to be the same about a sustained time frame.

Ghost Cash Generator ? Highly developed product

Even when the most crucial solution appeared to work clearly like a standalone item the Enhanced method basically appears to hang jointly clearly and perform very much quicker and a lot more productively as opposed to primary Ghost Income Generator product. For that reason my suggest could possibly be that if you choose to go for this solution, then it truly is well worth generating the additional financial investment upfront for it to really give the entire gains that the solution statements.

The sophisticated structure productively appears to be to shortcut the discovering curve and has you setting up an affiliate internet marketing network that might ordinarily just take several years to build up. The pace at which the Leading-edge service is fairly staggering, and qualified prospects me to surprise simply how much a lot better the more enhance will perform.

Even while the jury is still out within the long-term returns of Ghost Money Generator earlier final results trace that this could very well be new major new innovation to strike the internet online affiliate marketing business. If very little else the large short-term revenue most certainly seem to be probably the most beneficial available on the market we?ll just really have to find out if this product can always keep doing for any environmentally friendly period of time or in case the bubble bursts. I for 1 might be carefully checking any new Ghost Money Generator items and nearly anything else from your Manglon Crew.

Innovation and Its Impact on Entrepreneurship | Business 2 ...

The iPad mini ? barely released, yet already the target of tech geeks everywhere for being contrary to Steve Jobs? wishes, and a retread of the Kindle Fire or the Galaxy Nexus 7. Articles have started flourishing across the interwebs, calling Apple a ?follower.? Does a new product/service need to be the best thing since sliced bread in order to be called innovative? There are many definitions of innovation and the need to stand out from the crowd can sometimes stifle perfectly viable entrepreneurial ventures out of fear of not being innovative enough. Let?s decipher what innovation means, and what it means to you, the small business owner.

Disruptive vs. Incremental

Disruptive vs. Incremental When people think of something truly innovative, they tend to believe it has to be revolutionary in a knock-your-socks-off kind of way in order to qualify. But take a look at some of the most successful tech companies of the last few years. Twitter? They basically took Facebook status updates and shrunk them down to byte size (or 140 characters). Instagram? A mobile Flickr for hipsters. And the list goes on, but do you see the trend here? Each of these (now) big-name companies started off by simply tweaking a concept that already existed, and made it their own, finding tremendous success along the way. They were evolutionary, not revolutionary.

The term ?disruptive innovation? was coined by Clayton M. Christensen, professor at Harvard Business School. In his book The Innovator?s Dilemma, Christensen defines disruptive innovation as products/services that ?bring to a market a very different value proposition than had been available previously. Generally, disruptive technologies underperform established products in mainstream markets. But they have other features that a few fringe (and generally new) customers value.? In other words, disruptive innovations will open up a new segment in the market, which early adopters jump on first to be followed by the general consumer audience.

On the other hand, incremental innovations are, according to the Business Dictionary, ?a series of small improvements to an existing product or product line that usually helps maintain or improve its competitive position over time.? As opposed to disruptive innovations, incremental ones are more evolutionary in nature, as they won?t allow you to carve out a new market, but instead strengthen your position in the market by simply refining your already existing offering, or offer a product with a slight twist on something that was already successful, and make it your own.

It seems widely established in the business world that both disruptive and incremental innovations are considered, well, innovations. So, why did Apple catch so much flack for launching a product that provided an evolutionary step in their established iPad?s lifecycle? One word: Expectations. People have grown to expect Apple to ?wow? them at every new product launch, while the company itself seems content with tweaking its already successful products. So the general public?s perception seems to be that disruptive innovations only can be called innovations, while incremental ones are only refinements. Let?s take a closer look at bridging the gap between these.

Innovation vs. Refinement

Innovation vs. Refinement In Don Lehman?s article on the Techblock, the founder of More/Real replaces the debate of disruptive vs. incremental squarely on innovation vs. refinement instead. To him, ?overemphasizing innovation undervalues the benefits of refinement.? In other words, companies can sometimes be so blinded in their pursuit of the next great innovation, that they?ll miss out on the obvious moneymaker, which is simply continuing to refine the great product they already have on the market. The problem, according to Lehman, is that a lot of companies like to bandy the word ?innovation? around, without necessarily knowing what it truly means, nor what their (or their customers) expectations are when it comes to what makes a product/service innovative or not. Companies use it because it?s ?cool,? which isn?t exactly the end-goal when trying to run a successful business. It requires a lot more brainpower and resources in order to develop an offering that?s truly revolutionary. Refining a product or service gives you a solid basis to build from. As Lehman concludes in his article, ?Innovation is important, exciting, and necessary. But so is Refinement. We need to celebrate refinement more than we have. However we shouldn?t be asking ourselves which is more important. Innovation and refinement are not goals. They are methods and strategies. The question we should be asking: Is this Better? That?s the only goal that matters.?

I?d like to add another question: Will people purchase it, regardless of it being innovative /refined?

Do People Really Need Innovation?

What Do People Need? The real question is, and sorry to the idealists out there for being blunt, what?s going to bring in the most revenue? Specifically, what will you be able to offer that has the most potential to be bought by prospective customers, in large quantities? At the end of the day, it?s not so much about pursuing the Big Idea, but rather identifying what the market needs, not only at that point in time, but also for the foreseeable future. Your offering, and the way you position it, has to scratch an itch that consumers are experiencing, sometimes without even realizing it.

Circling back to my earlier Apple example, when the original iPad was first launched, people thought, ?That?s just a big iPhone,? or, ?Why would I need this, when I already have a laptop?? 2 and a half years and nearly a hundred million units sold later, doubters can put their doubts to rest: people actually did have a need for a lightweight device they?d be able to carry around, just to browse the Internet or read books/magazines on. What Apple was able to do was create a need, find a niche in a market over-saturated with desktop and laptop computers, by simply tweaking their iPhone concept and giving it a larger screen-size.

Let?s say you?re a burgeoning entrepreneur, or already in the process of mounting your own small business. Your fear is that a product/service you?re ready to launch isn?t innovative enough, that you won?t be able to differentiate yourself from the competition. What will determine the success of your business is how you manage it, from concept to launch, whether the market has a need for it, and then selling the heck out of it. When trying to raise capital to fund your business, investors and VC?s (Venture Capitalists) will be looking at your business plan, and how you plan on sustaining growth for your company, not just at how ?innovative? your product/service is. Execution, and long-term viability are key, not nice and shiny new stuff that?s going to generate a few oohs and aahs for 2 minutes and then fade away. So make sure you?ve done your homework (i.e., market research, resources planning, etc.) and take the leap!

What do you think? Have any ideas of your own that you thought weren?t innovative (enough), but that you may have second thoughts about after reading this post? Share away in the comments!

What Men Love About Women (Part 1) | Psychology Today

(Update: I've been rightfully criticized that the title of this post is misleading, so let me correct and atone. This is the first of two parts. The next post will focus on what men love about women -- and believe me, men have a lot of positive things to say about women -- but this first post contains a few of their frustrations.)

Last month, I shared some thoughts from women who participated in my recent survey. I asked them what they like about men, and what they find frustrating. (You can find that post here.) The survey is part of my 2014 book, The Woman?s Guide to How Men Think: Love, Commitment, and the Male Mind.?I'm posting a few of the responses as a great big thank-you to all who have generously participated.

This month, it?s the men?s turn. To my own surprise, a great number of men have responded to the survey. Most had good things to say, a few were critical, and some were just plain confused. As one man put it, ?I understand everything about women, except all those weird things they do.?

Confused or not, it seems that men like women. A lot.

First, the Complaints

Before we discuss what?s great about women, here are some male frustrations. One of the most common complaints I hear from men, both in the survey and in the clinic, is the fear that no argument can end positively. They fear they are destined to lose, and that women never forgive.

?I get a lot of grief for not communicating better, even though I have good intentions. Men are always told we need to communicate better. What do women need to do better? Nothing, it seems. Always, the fault seems to be mine. Can a woman lift as much weight as a man? In general no, and who expects her to? A man would be a jerk for suggesting that she should. Why then are we men constantly expected to communicate the same way women do? There are inherent differences between men and women.?

?When we [men] argue, we?re arguing about that particular conflict; you?re arguing about that conflict plus past conflicts.?

?We don?t expect our women to be perfect, but they seem to expect that from us. We?re not perfect. Neither are they.?

?They don?t forget anything. The old mistakes, purchases that didn?t work out, the thing said in anger.? You can never take them back, even if you wish you hadn?t said them, and they always bring it back up in an argument. They will not accept an apology and forget it.?

?We think you expect us to be perfect when you remember our past mistakes but forget our successes.?

?It seems like I can knock myself out doing repairs, cutting firewood, working on the cars, even housework(!) but somehow, there?s an issue with what I HAVEN?T done. That really makes me retreat. I don?t need to discuss everything and explain what I was thinking at any given moment!?

?I guess, in the end, men just want to remove the guesswork. We just want to know that there IS a right answer.?

Another common frustration: the different approaches men and women take toward fixing problems.

?Women seem to focus more on the problem rather than the solution.?

?I think guys would be more inclined to be more communicative if women would be more agreeable to get to the point and fix the problem, rather than avoid it and focus on the symptoms.?

?Women don?t like to fix problems; rather, ?venting? about it is often enough. This, of course, just means that the problem comes back later and we go through the cycle all over again.?

One of the most common frustrations that women expressed was about male silence. Here?s what men had to say in defense of silence and stoicism:

?Being quiet is a way to process, much in the same way that women need to talk to process?

?She should understand there are times were I just want to sit calm, think about it, and remain silent, at least for a couple of minutes. Or she should at least understand that she?s simply better than me at arguing.?

?When I talk, it is to convey information and thoughts or ask for your opinion. Just chattering away about random details makes it really hard to figure out what, if anything, I am expected to do. I realize that sometimes there is no action item for me in their 50 stage loosely related detailed report, but most of the time there is something they want me to do at step 37 of 50 and I can miss it due to low signal to noise ratio. I wish I could tell my wife how hard it is to follow her train of seemingly unrelated thoughts sometimes.?

?Because men relate by doing things together, we rely more on nonverbal communication.?

?If we are being silent it?s because we either (a) don?t want to hurt your feelings with the truth, (b) trying to word our reply just right so we don?t hurt your feelings even more or (c) don?t know what else to say to comfort you because you?ve already said it all!"

Bad Boys and Good Men

One of the things that confounds men is women?s attraction to ?bad boys.? Men who regard themselves as communicative, humble, and reliable find it baffling when women choose disrespectful men.

?Why do you date men who treat you poorly and miss out on the good ones? We have to compete with the bad ones. Women need to look beyond urges or first impressions.?

?I wish we understood what it is women want in a man. I have learned that though you say you want a nice, emotional guy, those aren?t the guys that attract you.?

?Honest guys don?t try to portray themselves as perfect, but there are definitely plenty of guys that will put on that mask so they can ?bag? a girl and then leave her when he?s done. Ironically, they get most of the women... then women complain ?You just can?t trust guys. All they ever want to do is sleep with you, and they will say or do anything to accomplish that goal.? I?m sure she was warned about this guy from SOMEONE and she used the typical excuse: ?No! He?s not like that at all. With me it?s different!.??

?I happen to be rather good at communicating what I feel and need, and notice that a lot of women find this unattractive.?

?We are so basic, so easy to keep happy. I think in a way this frustrates women. I think many women want us to meet them on the more emotional plane but that contradicts what may have originally attracted them to us in the beginning. They want the strong, silent type or the bad boy but once the relationship is up and running then they want us to be more sensitive or open to talking about more things. Unfortunately, I don?t really think you can have it both ways.?

?Women will never truly understand that they are the reason there are poor quality men in the world. If women stopped befriending and forgiving misogynists, the world would be better off.?

?I think women have a hard time understanding what kind of guy is good for them. They often choose men who (as other men already see) are bad for them, then bitch after they get dumped. They like confident men. Well, men are rarely super confident around women they care about. They are however confident around women they don?t care about. Why? Because they don?t care whether the woman likes them or not and are freely themselves. This attracts women to men who don?t like them much. Guys can see this a million miles away. Women have a hard time figuring this out.??

Let?s leave it there for now, and in the next post I?ll let you know what men had to say about making women happy, keeping a peaceful relationship, and a few of the many things that men like most about women. (If you don?t want to wait, the whole thing is here.)

One father?s quest against the misogynistic underbelly of the gaming?community

When it got out that Mike Hoye altered the code in the Legend of Zelda game The Wind Waker?to change protagonist Link?s masculine pronouns to feminine ones, he didn?t receive as many death?threats as he thought he would.

?But not none,? he adds. His family and his three-year-old daughter specifically have been?threatened as a result of his decision to do something to make his daughter feel less alienated by a?game.

Women are still generally regarded as ?the other? in the video game community. Sites like?Fat, Ugly, or Slutty?and? Not In?The Kitchen Anymore chronicle the misogynistic abuse women have to deal with when they engage?in their hobby online. Games are usually marketed to men with male protagonists, and women are?NPCs ? non-player characters ? or exist only for eye candy.

?Since I have a daughter growing up who seems to like Dad?s hobbies, I thought there was a?small thing that I could do about that,? Hoye says. When his daughter played the game, she started?identifying with Link as being herself ? she was the one who was saving people and fighting monsters.

He started out reading the dialogue and changing the pronouns as he went, but wanted to make it?easier on himself and for his daughter, since she was reaching reading age. He decided to go in and?change the code itself.

?I?ve been working with computers for a long time and you don?t usually stay in this career for?very long unless you can get obsessive about stuff like this,? he says.

Eventually he succeeded and put?the code up on his personal blog. After that, it took off. The story was reposted in various places,?picked up by Reddit, and then started appearing on sites like Kotaku and Hack a Day. The response to?the story has been polarizing: Hoye says he gets people calling him dad of the year, but there are also?the people who threaten his family.

?The pushback I?ve gotten about this has been remarkable,? he says. It?s not the first time that?there?s been an extreme negative reaction to people who want to change video games ? particularly?changes regarding women?s involvement or depiction. When Anita Sarkeesian started a?Kickstarter page?for a planned video series about women in video games, she received death threats, there was an?organized attempt to get her Kickstarter page taken down, her Wikipedia page was vandalized, and one?person created a game where the point was to punch her face until the screen went red. When?BioWare writer Jennifer Hepler said that she didn?t play video games and that games should have an?option to skip combat, she was also at the centre of a ?vitriolic?backlash. She was called a cunt, a whore,?and a bitch ? insults that are exclusively reserved for women.

But Hoye is fighting back against this hostility to women in the video game community.

?I did not expect this to take off the way it did. Since it has, I have been trying to use this as a?platform to make more people aware of the situation and I guess ultimately to show this is something?that maybe we can change and that we need to change.?

Cell Phones Can Be Addictive | UA Magazine

cell, mobile, phone, message, addiction, consumption, materialist, impulsiveAre you addicted?to your cell phone??That depends on how impulsive and materialistic you are.?American researchers James Roberts and Stephen Pirog suggest mobile phones are more than just communication tools. Their study shows?phones are?actually yet another form of consumption.

Roberts and Pirog?quote different?earlier studies, pointing out that cell phones?can be status symbols or even extensions of ?the self? and that average?young adults on a?typical day check their cell 60 times and send 109.5 text messages.

To better look at mobile phones as consumption tools,?Roberts and Pirog asked 191 business students to complete a questionnaire about cell phone use, materialism and impulsiveness.??The students?for example answered?how extravagant or easily tempted they were and how much they liked owning luxurious things.

With the results Roberts and Pirog were able to show that?the level of?materialism and impulsiveness of a person can actually predict his or her?mobile phone use and instant messaging use. The more materialistic and impulsive, the more likely to?use the cell phone extensively.

It?s?of course?not just the phone, but its functions that can be addictive, Roberts and Pirog explain.??These and other?technological devices can be another way for consumers to cope with the exigencies of life and self-esteem struggles.?

Google Drive adds site publishing, won't quite replace your Geocities page

The hit parade of Google Drive updates continues. As of today, account holders can publish web content to their Drive storage in a public folder accessible from any browser; it can even host JavaScript for those who want to run web apps from their personal space. Lest we rush to toss out our existing web hosts, however, Google has some inherent ground rules. Content has to be static, and any links to other pages or files in the folder need a special approach to show web addresses that make sense to mere humans. As such, Google Drive won't quite relive the glory days of 1998 and simple web tools; at least we can still add a permanent "under construction" GIF.
