CINCINNATI (AP) ? Fool me once, the saying goes. But 50 times? That's what a convincing art forger did for nearly three decades when he donated his copies of Picassos and other works of art to unsuspecting museums in 20 states.

Mark A. Landis, who has dressed as a Jesuit priest or posed as a wealthy donor driving up in a red Cadillac, apparently never took money for his forgeries and has never been arrested.

Now his "works" have been collected into their own tongue-in-cheek exhibit, called Faux Real and opening on April Fools' Day at the University of Cincinnati.

Educating people about forgery and letting people know about Landis "is the only way to stop him," said Mark Tullos, director of the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, La., which was duped in 2010 with a donation of a painting supposedly by American Charles Courtney Curran.

Landis creates works in oil, watercolor, pastels, chalk, ink and pencil, making most of his copies from museum or auction catalogs that provide dimensions and information on the originals.

He sometimes bestows gifts under different names, such as the Father Arthur Scott alias used at Hilliard. In that case, he told officials that his dead mother had left works including Curran's oil-on-wood painting "Three Women" and that he was donating it in her memory.

Tullos said museum employees became suspicious when Landis kept changing the subject under questioning. After he drove off, the museum quickly concluded it was a forgery.

To convince museums he is a philanthropist, he also concocts elaborate stories about health concerns, said Cincinnati exhibit co-curator Matthew Leininger.

"He has been having heart surgery for almost 30 years," Leininger said with a frustrated laugh. "This is the strangest case the museum realm has known in years."

Landis, 57, acknowledges what he's up to. He told The Associated Press in a phone interview from his home in Laurel, Miss., that he made his first forgery donation to a California museum in 1985.

"They were so nice. I just got used to that, and one thing led to another," he said. "It never occurred to me that anyone would think it was wrong."

The Cincinnati exhibit of about 40 works given to 15 museums grew to around 100 when Landis donated 60 pieces he possesses, along with his priest's outfit.

The Faux Real show will run through May 20 at the Dorothy W. and C. Lawson Reed Jr. Gallery. It depicts famous art forgers, details of how Landis made some donations and ways of detecting fakes. Visitors can view some works under ultraviolet light that causes sections to glow if they contain contemporary ingredients.

Art experts say not accepting payment for his forgeries has helped keep Landis from being charged with a crime. Museum officials say forgeries can hurt their reputation and cost time and money researching suspected fraud.

Landis typically targets smaller museums without resources to thoroughly check donations. While museums don't pay Landis, some treat him to meals, receptions and gifts like catalogs and souvenirs before realizing they were duped, Leininger said.

The exhibit doesn't judge Landis but is using his story to show how forgeries occur and demonstrate that institutions and the public "shouldn't take things at face value," exhibit co-curator Aaron Cowan.

The exhibit won't increase the value of Landis' works ? considered worthless except as educational tools on forgery ? and the curators have heard no objections to spotlighting his works.

Landis won't profit from the show but says it is "nice of them to do this." And though Leininger says he doesn't think Landis can stop, the forger acknowledges that it's harder to fool people now "than the '80s and '90s, when you could just walk in and donate."

Physical Therapists Offer Tips for Healthy Gardening

As we enjoy the unusually warm spring weather, many are also looking forward to springing back into the garden. A place where plants, veggies and flowers thrive, a garden is also where people of all ages, fitness levels and shades of green thumb can enjoy physical activity. As with all types of exercise, there is a risk of injury if done improperly. According to Conshohocken Physical Therapy (CPT), it is important that gardeners take a health-conscious approach to both prevent injuries and reap the health rewards of gardening.

?Many gardeners injure themselves because they don?t view gardening as a workout,? says CPT President, Desirea D. Caucci, PT, DPT. ?Gardening is a strenuous activity and it is very easy for people to overdo it, especially for seniors or those who have pre-existing conditions, limited mobility or who are normally inactive.?

Common gardening tasks, such as digging, planting, weeding, mulching and raking can cause stress and strain on muscles and joints, primarily in the shoulders, back, neck and knees. CPT recommends the following tips to minimize the risk of injury:

Warm up before you begin. Get your heart rate up by taking a 10-minute walk followed by some stretches for your upper and lower back, neck, arms and legs. Roll your shoulders back in a circular motion and slowly move your head from side to side a few times to loosen up.

Don?t overdo it. Be mindful of how your body feels. If you experience an aching back or neck, then slow down and stretch or stop and switch to a different task.

Use a garden cart or wheelbarrow to move tools and heavy planting materials.

Don?t kneel on both knees. Keep one foot on the ground to give your back more stability. If you have to kneel, use knee pads or a pillow to absorb some of the pressure.

Change positions and take frequent breaks to avoid stiffness or cramping.

Start with smaller projects and build gradually. Don?t try to do it all at once.

Practice proper body mechanics. Bend at your knees when you grab something or pull a weed, bend your knees and contract your abdominal muscles to avoid straining your back.

End your gardening session with a short walk or some light stretching. Take a warm bath or shower to help prevent next-day soreness.

If you experience pain, contact your physical therapist.

We?d be remiss if we didn?t mention the physical benefits of gardening:

Burns approximately 272 calories per hour (the same amount of calories in about one Grande Starbucks caffe latte, ? of a Big Mac, 3 ? glasses of wine, one snickers bar, 1.3 cans of Coke, or 9 carrots).

Strengthens nearly all of the muscles of your body with the movements involved in planting, weeding, maintaining, etc. You are exercising and not even realizing it!

Being outdoors allows you to soak up vitamin D from the sun?s rays. Vitamin D is vital to keeping your bones strong and for promoting immune function. Be sure to protect your skin from burning by applying sun-screen prior to gardening and staying in shady areas whenever possible.

Improving your home?s landscape also provides the benefit of increasing the value of your home. The landscapes you create are an artistic expression for you and others to enjoy each and every day. It provides an instantaneous uplifting feeling that brightens your day and an ongoing feeling of pride in the beauty that you have created. It assists nature in attracting beautiful insects, like butterflies for pollination, and you get the added pleasure of having them around. If vegetable gardens are your preference, the bounty of vegetables and herbs are the reward for your taste buds and for your pocketbooks!

Freemium Game Dev Addmired Rebrands As Machine Zone, Lands $8M From Menlo Ventures

Oh, how times have changed for Addmired team. The Y Combinator startup first debuted in 2008 with an Hot or Not-esque social network plugin, but eventually found their footing after pivoting to become a developer of freemium multiplayer mobile games like iMob and its recently released sequel. Now they're looking to do a bit of rebranding by renaming themselves Machine Zone, and to celebrate, they've also announced that they have raised a cool $8 million Series B round led by Menlo Ventures. Their board of directors is being bolstered to boot -- Machine Zone's Menlo Ventures managing director Shervin Pishevar will be joining the board, as will Anthos Capital managing director Bryan Kelly.

Beverly Hills Immigration Law: Immigration Issues Touch Many ...

USA Today: The Bible tells its readers to obey the law, but it also tells them to welcome strangers and foreigners.

But supporters of measures such as Alabama's say the Bible teaches that the government's job is to enforce the law, and those who break it should be punished. The American Center for Law and Justice, a Christian legal group, filed a brief in federal court supporting the Alabama law.

That measure, which the Obama administration is challenging, prohibits undocumented immigrants from entering into "business transactions" with the state, requires police to check immigration status during traffic stops and makes it a crime for U.S. citizens to knowingly assist undocumented immigrants.

"The whole heart of the Gospel is in Matthew 25, where Jesus said, 'I was a stranger and you welcomed me,' " said Randy Hoover-Dempsey, pastor of All Saints Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Tenn., whose congregation includes about 200 Burmese immigrants.

Welcoming strangers and immigrants is a good thing, said Gil McKee, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

But the Bible is no excuse for breaking the law, said McKee, whose congregation includes Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, a Republican who pushed for a state law that cracks down on illegal immigration.

"We have an obligation under Romans 13 to obey the law," McKee said. "A lot of the folks who are here illegally know the law. It's their responsibility as a result to abide by the law." Romans 13 says in part, "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Most major denominations in the United States support changes in immigration law.

Last summer, the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant group in the USA, passed a resolution calling for the federal government to increase border security while at the same time providing "a just and compassionate path to legal status" for people in the U.S. illegally.

Roman Catholic bishops and the National Association of Evangelicals have also supported comprehensive changes in immigration law.

Reaction among people in the pews has been mixed. A 2010 Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life survey showed that 39% of evangelicals and 45% of Catholics support reforms that include tighter borders as well as a path to citizenship.

Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, a group that wants to lessen immigration, said denominations that support more lenient immigration laws are well-meaning but wrong. "Illegal aliens to them are persons in need," he said. "They respond, as religious institutions should, with compassion. Where they get off track is thinking that this illegal alien in front of me doesn't have to obey the law."

Beck, a former associate editor of the United Methodist Reporter, said that the Bible doesn't offer answers.

He said he believes that churches want reform without enforcement. For Beck, that means deporting anyone in the U.S. illegally.

"Either people who break the law have to go back home or you don't have immigration law," he said.

Many immigrants in the country illegally want to become legal but have few options to do so, said Kayla Snow, an immigration counselor at Vineyard Columbus, a megachurch of about 8,500 in Westerville, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus.

The church runs a counseling service for immigrants two days a week. It got involved in immigration issues because the church has immigrant members, some of whom are in the country illegally.

"If we are going to care for our immigrant brothers and sisters in the U.S. something has to change in the law," she said. "It doesn't treat them fairly."

Heather Larson, director of compassion and justice ministry at Willow Creek Community Church in suburban Chicago, agrees. Willow Creek, which draws more than 24,000 people to its weekend services, is one of the most influential megachurches in the country.

"(Our) wake-up call to the need for reform came from hearing personal stories of people in our congregation and our community who are affected by this broken system," Larson wrote in an e-mail. "Current immigration laws can divide families and leave people feeling isolated and hopeless."

McKee said he feels sympathy for families that are broken up when parents or other family members are deported, but he said that people have to face the consequences of deciding to enter the country illegally.

However, the pastor is also pragmatic. He would like to see some reform that allows people who work hard and don't have a criminal record to become legal residents.

Pope visits heart of conservative Catholic Mexico

SILAO, Mexico (AP) ? The last time a pope visited Mexico, more than 1 million believers cheered and wept in the streets of the capital. Aztec dancers shook rattles and blew conch shells inside the cathedral where John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint in the Americas.

It's been a decade since those ecstatic scenes capped the beloved pope's final trip to the country, and his successor arrives Friday to a much more subdued welcome.

Benedict XVI comes to a church battling to extend its political and social gains while overcoming painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world. It is also a nation grappling with a rampant drug war that has spread fear into once-tranquil regions such as this state of Guanajuato.

"There is a very immense peace that we need in Mexico because of the insecurity," said Marcela Arguello, a 26-year-old housewife who said she plans to join the throngs along the route of the papal motorcade through the city of Leon, the state's largest city.

Mexico has been traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in drug-related violence in less than six years, and while sunbaked, rolling Guanajuato is far from the major drug trafficking routes, the shadow of the conflict looms even here.

A recent series of apparently gang-related shootings have left some two dozen people dead in the state, which is noted for leather goods, automotive factories and picturesque tourist towns.

Yet even the drug cartels profess to be people of faith. At least 11 banners signed by the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities of Guanajuato last week, including in Leon, offered peace during the papal trip.

But the mass excitement that greeted the past pope seemed to be missing as well.

By Thursday morning, Leon's Metropolitan Park, where officials are prepared for more than 100,000 campers, was empty apart from the usual joggers and families out for a walk.

Preparations were under way, though: City workers were trimming trees and bushes along the motorcade route, bleachers were going up and a truck rolled past Leon's cathedral spraying insecticide to kill any dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

The airwaves were full of public service announcements urging those attending open-air papal events to dress lightly, wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. A high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 centigrade) was forecast for Friday.

As many as 300,000 people are expected to gather for Mass Sunday, a large turnout even in a state that is 93.8 percent Catholic, the highest in the country. Guanajuato is also a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party, which has roots in militantly Catholic organizations that formed decades ago to challenge an atheistic federal government.

Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.

Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across the nation, reacting partly to the legalization of gay marriage and abortion in Mexico City, the cultural and political center of the country.

At the same time, the nation's church leaders are fighting to overcome their share of the global child sex-abuse scandal, which destroyed the reputation of the most influential Mexican figure in the church.

The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.

Setbacks such as the legalization of abortion and gay marriage have spurred the church to take a more active role in public life, said Miguel Bedolla, interim dean of Mexican American Catholic College, an institution affiliated with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.

"The church thrives when it encounters hardship," he said.

Calderon's government is backing legislation that would end a now-oft-ignored restriction on religious observances in public places, as well as a ban on religious participation in politics.

If approved, it could lay the groundwork for laws allowing church ownership of media and openly religious education on school property, said political analyst John Ackerman, of the legal research institute at Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"This opens the door for the church to start using public spaces," Ackerman said. "It has the full intention to be interpreted as occupying public spaces with religious ceremonies, that's what's on the table."

That builds upon the dramatic changes that John Paul II nurtured during his 26-year papacy, which saw Mexican leaders abandon a series of anti-religion laws so restrictive that the pope was technically breaking the law by wearing clerical garb in public on his first trip.

Benedict will meet with Calderon on Saturday, six days before the start of a presidential campaign that could unseat National Action after 12 years in the country's highest office. The church has repeatedly disavowed any political overtones to the pope's trip, and Calderon's office notes that his invitation to Benedict was first sent in 2007.

John Paul, however, made a point of avoiding visits to countries in the throes of election campaigns to not be seen as giving any political message.

Benedict has emphasized the need for Catholic politicians to stay true to their faith in public life. While he was head of the Vatican's doctrine office in 2003, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger published a set of guidelines reminding Catholic leaders that the church's longheld opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage weren't up for negotiation.
